Overwatch is a multiplayer-focused hero shooter from Blizzard originally released in 2016 and was the first wholly original IP from the studio since 1997’s StarCraft. As mentioned, the game is focused on competitive, team-based multiplayer where two teams of six would face off in objective-driven matches, though modes like free-for-all and team deathmatch would be added in future updates. The game’s sequel, Overwatch 2, will continue this focus on team-based multiplayer, though team size will be reduced from six to five and various character reworks are planned for the sequel.

The clip of this unwilling sacrifice is from Reddit user Infam0usFPS, who posted the clip on the official Overwatch subreddit so that all could see how things unfolded on the Route 66 map. D.Va can be seen on the overhead walkway alongside Mei near the second checkpoint as the pair push into one of the doorways to keep the defending team from halting their progress. It appears the two quickly become overwhelmed so, to delay the defenders, the Mei flees back outside and drops a wall that blocks in their team’s D.Va with the defending team.
An unfortunate truth within the Overwatch community, as the clip’s comment section shows, is that Mei players have a tendency to troll their teammates using their icewall ability. Most of the maps in Overwatch have doorways which can be completely closed off with the wall and, in turn, Mei players may use this to leave teammates trapped in an unwinnable fight against multiple members of the opposing team. It is the sort of action where, depending on the context and who is playing, rides the line between being funny or toxic.
The silver-lining in Infam0us’ clip is Mei and D.Va’s team was able to secure the checkpoint and keep the match going, making it lean more on the funny side. However, it would not be surprising to see players annoyed by this kind of play, regardless of the outcome, so any Mei players who may consider this in the future may want to proceed with caution.
Overwatch is currently available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
